"1st Mystic T Ranch Baby Yak Born" by cynthia on June 11, 2010, 11:29 pm, in category Mountain Pet & Livestock News
Our first Mystic T Ranch yak bull calf was born June 2, 2010. He is the spittin' image of his father, Farlee. A beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky to the east just after he was born. He was the bright rainbow at the end of our day.

The first few days he spent most of his waking hours nursing and then sleeping. Once he got his mountain legs, two days later, all that changed. Now he runs up and down and around the corral as fast as his legs will carry him. He is a little dynamo but a s.....

"How to tell Spring has arrived" by cynthia on April 11, 2010, 8:43 pm, in category Mountain Wildlife Sightings
You know Spring has arrived in the Mountains when:
The Robin has been singing since February 1st.
The chipmunks have been out since late March.
The Stellar Jay has found the bird feeder before the bear.
The rabbits are busy selecting their mates.
The squirrels are constantly on the move.
The Nuthatch has moved into the purple birdhouse.
Grass is starting to turn green beneath the melting snow.
More than one bug has landed on my shirt.
Cromwell has kicke.....

"In Memory ot Teddy" by cynthia on January 18, 2009, 8:02 am, in category Mountain Pet & Livestock News
It is never easy to say goodbye to friend and companion of almost 17 years. Yesterday brought that time to Teddy. She was very much loved and is deeply missed. Kidney failure quickly took her strength, her ability to eat and drink but not her sweetness and mental sharpness. It is hard when the body fails but the mind remains intact. She still could call to us and purr.

Teddy was always as light as a feather and able to almost literally fly to any place she wanted to be. She loved watchi.....

"Robin singing in January" by cynthia on January 10, 2009, 11:28 pm, in category Mountain Wildlife Sightings
Someone forgot to tell the Robin that it is still winter here. Today I heard our first Robin of 2009 singing. He is trying hard to attract a mate although I am not sure where he will find one foolish enough to start a family at 9,400 ft in the second week of January.

Our weather has been very cold with winds exceeding 80 mph. Certainly not the best of conditions for nest building. He is determined in his song however, so perhaps there is a female Robin who believes in him enough to tak.....

"First chicks of 2009" by cynthia on January 10, 2009, 11:14 pm, in category General
Our first batch of incubated chicks hatched today. Seven have made it out of the shell, one is in the process and we have 6 yet to emerge. We have had only one bad  egg in the hatch so far.

Yes, eggs can be hatched at 9,400 ft., even in January and when the temperature outside is 14 degrees and the wind gusting up to 80 mph. So far our mixed breed mountain chicks are doing well. They are starting to eat and drink. We incubated 15 eggs to test out our new incubator. It seems t.....

"Coyote at our door" by cynthia on January 1, 2009, 10:38 pm, in category Mountain Wildlife Sightings
A coyote came to our front door and looked in. Key, our generally brave black cat, fluffed her tail upon seeing this hungry visitor. The coyotes are coming in much too close to the house and they are no longer avoiding close encounters with us. Recently, two coyotes came in near the house and one showed an aggressive body posture to Joe. This is a concern as several of the coyotes are the size of a very large German Shepherd.

Here in the Mountains the coyotes have grown into a serious .....
